Atelier itd at the Swedish Cities Mission Forum
Atelier itd at the Swedish Cities Mission Forum
On May 29th and 30th 2024, Atelier itd was invited to participate in the first Swedish Cities Mission Forum in the city of Umeå, Sweden. The forum was co-organized by the seven Swedish Mission Cities: Umeå, Stockholm, Malmö, Lund, Helsingborg, Gothenburg and Gävle, with the support of Viable Cities, the Swedish strategic innovation program working towards the mission of Climate Neutral Cities 2030.
The Forum brought together key stakeholders from different sectors and levels of government necessary for the successful implementation of the EU Cities Mission. These include the European Commission, the EU Cities Mission platforms NetZeroCities, CapaCITIES and Driving Urban Transitions, as well as relevant local, regional and national stakeholders in Sweden and across the EU.
The purpose of the Forum was to explore how to scale the Cities Mission in three directions: “Scaling up through policy change”, “Scaling out through replication”, and “Scaling deep through change of mindset”. These three themes were explored in focus sessions where city representatives shared their perspectives and discussed with the participants.
Atelier itd participated in the session titled “Scaling deep through a change of mindset”, which focused on the just transitions approach in the Mission and the need to build common narratives, frameworks and languages around it. Nayla Saniour (Atelier itd) moderated the session, weaving insights from the theoretical framework on just transitions presented by Marcial Silva (Dark Matter Labs) and practical experiences from the city of Umeå presented by Annika Myren, and the city of Stockholm presented by Erika Eneqvist. The presentations of the panelists were followed by a dialogue with the participants, which was an enriching moment of sharing challenges, doubts and motivation to pursue the Mission in an inclusive, just and equitable way.
One of the highlights of the Forum was the opening ceremony of the Viable Cities office in Umeå, in the inspiring Scharinska villa, an architectural jewel that was transformed from 18th century family house to a rock club that witnessed the rise of Umeå’s punk scene at the turn of the 21st century.
The building was restored by the Municipality to become a workplace for a handful of Swedish organizations, such as RISE, a part of Viable Cities. The building tells the story of a local community that came together to preserve its heritage over the centuries.
In addition to the Forum’s sessions, Atelier itd’s team took advantage of the trip to Sweden to meet with municipal representatives from the city of Umeå and explore opportunities to deepen the just transition narratives towards climate neutrality with the city and its local stakeholders. Finally, Atelier itd facilitated an internal workshop with several members of Viable Cities’ core team to explore how the Swedish national platform can integrate a just transition approach into its governance structures, themes and learning spaces.
The participation of Atelier itd in this series of encounters took place in the framework of the project Accelerating Cities Mission Just Transitions, funded by Porticus, where Atelier itd, Dark Matter Labs, Climate KIC and Viable Cities participate.
